EDMONTON, Alberta — Popular Canadian influencer and author Duncan Kiige is facing an unexpected wave of backlash after a public incident at the 91 Street Costco in Edmonton that has left his reputation under scrutiny.
What started as a routine family shopping trip reportedly turned into a scene of embarrassment when store employees confronted Kiige for allegedly tampering with merchandise—in this case, a packet of Babybel cheese.
Shopping Trip Turns Into Confrontation
Witnesses claim Kiige, accompanied by his wife and three children, was stopped after staff members said surveillance cameras captured him opening a package, consuming part of it, and then returning the rest to the shelf.
One employee, speaking off the record, emphasized the seriousness of the matter:
“We treat theft the same way regardless of who it is. Returning opened food is a health and safety violation, and Costco has zero tolerance for that.”
Family Left Shocked
Shoppers at the scene described the moment as tense and humiliating, especially with Kiige’s young children present. “It was uncomfortable to watch,” a bystander said. “For someone who presents himself as a polished public figure, it was a stark contrast.”
Costco Declines Comment
Costco’s management has so far refused to issue an official statement, though staff reiterated that membership privileges come with clear responsibilities. “Respect for store policies applies to everyone, no matter their status,” another worker remarked.
Reputation on the Line
For Kiige, who has built a following as an Instagram personality and positioned himself as both an author and government consultant, the allegations mark a significant reputational setback. Social media chatter has already turned critical, with followers debating whether the incident could permanently damage his credibility.
As one employee bluntly summarized:
“Influencer or not, stealing cheese is still stealing cheese.”
