Sir Richard Branson has announced his wife’s death. Joan Templeman was 80 years old. The Virgin Group founder shared this sad news on Instagram. He said he is “heartbroken” over losing his partner of 50 years.
In his emotional tribute, Branson called Joan his “best friend” and “guiding light.” The couple married in 1989 on Necker Island. This is Branson’s private Caribbean retreat. Together, they raised three children and welcomed five grandchildren.
A Lifelong Partnership and Family Legacy
The business magnate’s Instagram post revealed their deep bond. “She was the most wonderful mum and grandmum,” wrote the 75-year-old entrepreneur. However, he did not share her cause of death.
Their son Sam also paid tribute. He described his mother as “the kindest, most loving, warm and abundantly generous woman.” Furthermore, he expressed deep gratitude for “the privilege of being your son.”
A Love Story That Stood the Test of Time
The couple’s romance began in London during the 1970s. According to their daughter Holly, Joan worked at a Portobello Road shop. Consequently, Richard visited daily for months, buying unnecessary items just to see her.
Branson once recalled falling for Joan immediately. He credited her as his “steady source of wisdom.” Moreover, he said she greatly influenced his better life decisions throughout their partnership.
While Branson built his Virgin empire, Joan remained the family’s foundation. Holly described her mother as always available with hugs and wise words. Therefore, she created a warm, welcoming home environment.
The announcement highlights the strong partnership that supported Branson’s business success. Their relationship lasted half a century, demonstrating enduring love and mutual support.
