From shooting with Martin Scorsese at 4am to watching Madonna explode on set, the actor answers your questions
“I hate high heels!”
Q: You’ve acted in some killer heels. Which have been your favourite? – SarahWales
I hate high heels! I can’t remember any favourites. In between takes, I’d be in slippers or Uggs. If it’s ladylike to be in heels, then that’s not my type of lady.
On outspoken women in Hollywood
Q: Do you think the entertainment industry still has issues with strong, outspoken, independent women? – CaptainLib
You definitely pay a price for being strong, outspoken and independent. But the women whom I admire, like Jane Fonda and Ava DuVernay, are strong, independent and speak their minds.
Shooting After Hours with Scorsese
Q: What are your memories of shooting After Hours with Scorsese? – Glider & Bauhaus66
It was one of those experiences that stays with you. At 4am, there’s a giddiness, a silliness. Working with Scorsese is a dream. He suggested I read the script for Black Rainbow on the set of New York Stories—so I did.
Nick Nolte in New York Stories
Q: What was it like working with Nick Nolte? – Kellysahero1970
He made me laugh a lot. One of the most brilliant, eccentric actors I’ve ever worked with. I loved him.
Why she directed Searching for Debra Winger
Q: What led you into directing? – repoman71
I was a young mom, trying to balance life and career. Missing my daughter’s birthday while filming devastated me. That experience led to the documentary—it was about asking other women, “How do we do it all?”
Madonna and that jacket
Q: What was it like making Desperately Seeking Susan as Madonna became a superstar? Did you keep the jacket? – HenleyRegatta & thatneilguy
She exploded while we were shooting. It was intense but she handled it great. I did keep the jacket but gave it to Peter Gabriel’s daughters. Now we can’t find it—bummer!
Her activist roots
Q: I saw you at the No Kings rally. Have you always been an activist? – PaulMariner
I grew up in a family of activists. Civil rights, human rights, and planetary rights have always mattered to me. Right now, it feels like we’re living in an authoritarian regime—it’s frightening.
Can’t recall Valley Girls?
Q: What was working on Valley Girls like? – johnnylewis
I can’t even remember doing it! I don’t really go back and watch my old work. I did see Pulp Fiction again in a hotel recently, but I usually don’t sit around watching myself.
The bliss of The Big Blue
Q: Was shooting The Big Blue as blissful as it looked? – 11LFO11
It really was—nine months of sun and beauty. Fun fact: my daughter Zoë Bleu is starring in Luc Besson’s new film Dracula – A Love Tale.
With John Cleese in Silverado
Q: What was it like working with John Cleese? – PeteTheBeat
I called him “The Professor.” He suggested books because I never went to college. He was lovely.
If she had a time machine…
Q: If you had a time machine like in Futra Days, where would you go? – TurangaLeela2
I’m trying to learn to stay present. But I’d probably go back to the last election in America. Am I gonna be in trouble for saying that?
No, she doesn’t karaoke “Rosanna”
Q: Do you sing “Rosanna” by Toto at karaoke? – McScootikins
God, no. That would be so embarrassing. I’ve done Patti Smith and Nirvana. If I sing anything, it’ll be that.
The role that got away
Q: Was there a role you missed out on that could’ve changed everything? – Kal_85
There was a great script called 3000 that I was going to do with Sean Connery. It morphed into Pretty Woman. My sister Patricia was also considered, but too young at the time.
Rosanna Arquette stars in Futra Days, available on digital platforms from 21 July 2025.
